When mulching beds be careful not to over mulch around the truck of your trees. That is where they take in oxygen. Avoid placing mulch on and around the crown or base of perennials. Some plants such as peonies won’t flower at all if their crowns are covered. Other shallow rooted perennials such as bell flowers can be smothered by heavy mulch.
